ABOUT“What we know matters but who we are matters more.”
'Who am I?' A bear? A bird? A woman? Or a little girl lost in the woods trying to find herself? 'Who am I? Who am I supposed to be?'
That's the question that has haunted Eva for many years. Everytime she feels she's close to figuring out who she's and what she meant to achieve life throws her a curve ball and she loses her ground again. It all began when she was still a little girl who dreamed about becoming a true leader to her people and making her family proud. Her father was Edgar Perez, a former alpha of a Bear Clan and Eva just wanted to be like him.
Life had other plans for Eva and at age of five she was sent from her hometown in Stevenson, Washington to Somerset, Pennsylvania. Eva went from being the oldest daughter of an former Alpha to a refugee, just one more child with no family. She was stripped of her identity for the first time in her life; lost her anchor in a way, but she thrived. She set goals to herself; she wanted to learn. She was a born bear and that was who she was meant to be. She felt it deep in her bones.
She was welcomed into the Wilkes sleuth and learned from and with them; grew to love them as a family. Eva worked hard to fit in and earn her place within the sleuth but never forgetting her origins. She would go back home one day. It was a matter of timing. The desire to go home and reclaim her true identity grew stronger when the news of the murder of her entire family along with the clan royals reached Somerset. Eva was devastated and she cried for a family she didn't remember well. She cried until she had no more tears left and then she never cried again.
Eva's father saved her life by casting her away and the resentment that she felt for being sent away turned into guilt for being the sole survivor; a guilt that fueled her growing thirst for revenge. Going home didn't mean just reclaiming her identity anymore. It meant avenging her family and destroying those who hunted and killed them.
Eva's whole mindset shifted into warrior mode from that moment on. Nothing else mattered. Her objective was to grow stronger and more skilled each day. A true warrior. A person whose name would be able to bring fear to the enemies. Eva practiced every day for the next few years. She was relentless in her pursue for wisdom and strength. The Wilkes taught her how to fight; she learned different martial arts; she went through weapons training. She was going to become the kind of warrior she felt the Wilkes would be proud of. The kind of bear who belonged with them.
She was in her early 20's when Eva decided it was time to take the mark and be claimed by the Great Spirit. Eva would finally be a bear. She was ready. The full moon came and Eva was marked only to be claimed by the Great Bird Spirit instead. She felt betrayed. She felt wronged and lost once again. For as long as she could remember she had been a bear and now suddenly that didn't matter and she was a bird. But who was she if not a bear? Who was she if not the only living child of Edgar Perez? Who was she if not part of the Wilkes sleuth?
“I've lived too long with pain. I won't know who I am without it.”
Eva lost her identity a second time the moment the Great Bird Spirit claimed her. All the training and preparation, all the hard work and the years planning a revenge - that seemed to have lost its meaning- it was all for nothing. Eva didn't understand why the Great Spirit took away everything that was the most precious to her. Was this a lesson she was being taught? To what purpose? She was bear...no! She had been a bear. Her heart would always remain one, but her duty was now bird.
She had to carry on and rebuild herself; adapt to this unexpected change in her life that conflicted with everything she knew and loved. Eva Perez would find a way to thrive once again despite the turmoil of conflicting emotions in her heart. Now a bird, she requested permission to change allegiances and shifted to the Avery Cast. She conquered her place in the Royal Guard. She aspired to better herself every day; to be the best version of herself she could possibly be.
Eva felt a deep sense of honor in serving the Avery Cast. She might not always understand their methods or feel like she truly belongs with them, but the cast would always be a priority despite her personal feelings. Eva was willing to make sacrifices in order to fulfill her obligations. She wouldn't allow what happened to her family's clan to repeat itself here. She wouldn't admit agitators; she wouldn't allow anyone to question the clan leaders.
Her role as a warrior and a member of the Royal Guard defined her over the past decade. She sought new challenges and learning experiences. She became an EMT fulfilling a need to help people; she taught classes at Modern Kyoshitsu which not only allowed her to keep training but it kept her close to one of the people she admired the most in her life, Callie Wilkes, the Bear Alpha. Eva would always feel grateful for the home the Wilkes gave her and the death of the former Alpha would always feel like a personal failure to her. If she was Bear, if she was the Bear Kappa maybe she could've done something.
Her work at the Modern Kyoshitsu also allowed her to train and observe new Royal Guard recruits. Eva was known for her strict training. She was hard on the students. She found it necessary to be hard on them and she was successful in what she did. She was proud of everything she achieved, but it cost her and there would always be something broken inside of her; something off that unbalanced her. It often felt like her gravity center shifted without warning and it was hard for her to find her balance again.
Despite the impression of control and conviction that she displayed Eva continued to struggle over who she was. She constantly felt like she was being pulled towards different directions and the arrival of a Thierry "Tank" Pierron felt like another hit she was taking. He showed up one day, became part of the Wilkes Clan and then he was Beta.
It should be her in his place and she resented him for that. She wanted to hate him too; she wanted him to be a bad man and expose him, but Eva knew it was unjust of her. She simply envied him. Tank fitted in easily while she always had to fight hard for every single thing in her life. She had to reinvent herself over and over and even after all these years Eva still doesn't know who was she supposed to be.
“When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.”
Eva has been in town for over thirty years and she's likely made several friends over the years. She's not that hard to get along with; she's wary of strangers, but around friends she's compassionate and good-natured. Eva does have her own code of honor that might complicate several of her relationships, though. She's torn as far as her identity as a bird is concerned. Eva feels a personal connection to bears; she was born bear and grew up a bear. Eva's close to many of them, but her allegiance and duty lies with the Avery Cast. She's extremely loyal and integrity prevents her from following her heart at times. Eva doesn't feel an emotional attachment to the birds and questions the Great Spirit choice for her.
Eva has no tolerance for people who break their word and she will immediately label them as liabilities and possible, traitors. They are no trustworthy in her eyes. She also won't admit anyone putting in doubt the Avery clan or its leadership. Eva believes in her duty above everything else and she won't hesitate on making an example of anyone who dares to threaten the clan or taint its name. Eva doesn't trust people who won't take sides or who won't stand up for what they believe in. Be for or against her, it doesn't matter but make a choice.
- A conflict between Eva and someone in the Avery clan who might put in question her loyalty, possibly a newer member as I feel like the old members would know where she stands regardless of her inner struggles concerning bears and birds.
